Tradition in the service of innovation: strategic expansion and technological transformation shape a new era for Air Serbia
The global aviation industry today operates in a complex environment shaped by diverse, yet simultaneous pressures, from challenges in the energy sector to growing passenger demands for reliable and personalised travel experiences. In balancing capacity optimisation with innovation, Air Serbia, which is currently undergoing the most dynamic development in its nearly century-long history, bases its growth strategy on strengthening international competitiveness, expanding its intercontinental network, and continuously enhancing the passenger experience. By adapting to market needs, making long-term plans, and pursuing innovation, we managed in the past year to achieve stable growth, and even surpass existing records, improve the destination network, modernise the fleet, and further strengthen Belgrade’s position as one of the most important hubs in Southeast Europe.
Growth and international expansion
In recent years, we have clearly defined where we want to position ourselves—as a regional leader with a growing global reach. Expanding the intercontinental network is a key strategic determinant that enables a far broader economic, market, and reputational impact. Long-haul routes allow revenue to be diversified, as they create a balance between seasonal European and year-round intercontinental flights, open new business opportunities, and strengthen the flow of people, knowledge, and capital. An airline is a natural ambassador of its home country, and the overall passenger experience on a flight directly affects how passengers perceive Serbia. Every long-haul flight and presence on the global map is not just a commercial category—it is an instrument of development.
The new air route to Toronto, as our fifth long-haul destination, is an exceptional example in this regard. By introducing direct flights to Toronto - starting 2026, Air Serbia’s presence on the global aviation map will be further strengthened. By connecting Serbia and Canada after more than three decades, we are creating a new platform for the diaspora from across the region, for business communities, and for everyone seeking faster and more efficient links between North America and Southeast Europe. Canada will be one of the hosts of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which further increases the destination’s appeal and supports the fact that we have chosen the right moment and the right direction for development. This direct air connection goes beyond the scope of a traditional commercial project: it is simultaneously an economic and emotional bridge, symbolically important for the region and strategically important for the company’s continued global growth.
The development of long-haul traffic requires careful assessment—from analysing market potential, to evaluating our operational readiness and available capacity, to the trust passengers have in our brand and the quality of our flights. Growth must be sustainable, based on real data, long-term projections, and a clear vision for positioning the company. Precisely for this reason, while we strengthen our presence in North America, we continue to consider other potential development directions. One of the logical next points is Miami, a destination with significant tourism and business potential.
Fleet modernization and technological transformation
To maintain an accelerated pace of growth and respond to the strong rise in demand, our company sets key strategic priorities through fleet modernization. Investments in newer, more efficient, and environmentally friendly aircraft enable reduced operational costs, higher reliability, and a significantly lower environmental impact—which are today among the most important parameters of competitiveness in global aviation. Newer and more modern aircraft allow us to expand our operations and further improve Belgrade’s connectivity with destinations across Europe. In the coming period, Air Serbia’s fleet will be joined by two new Embraer E-195 aircraft, as well as three additional Airbus A320s, bringing the total number of aircraft in 2026 to 31. Through continued cooperation with airBaltic, one of Europe’s most innovative carriers and our long-standing codeshare partner, we strengthen operational capacity while continuously expanding our growing network of destinations, maintaining flexibility and continuity of operations on both existing and new routes. We remain committed to innovation and technological development; all aimed at strengthening competitiveness in the European market. At the same time, we are aware that air transport drives tourism development and is an important source of foreign currency inflow, which makes our responsibility even greater. The results achieved over the past four years, including the introduction of nearly 50 new destinations to our network, demonstrate Serbia’s strong connectivity with the world. Their continuously stable demand confirms our ability to quickly adapt to market changes and global challenges, as well as the effective combination of strategic planning, fleet flexibility, and careful monitoring of passenger preferences.
The past year has been a historic one in multiple respects. Air Serbia connects Serbia with more than 100 destinations across Europe, the Mediterranean, North America, and Asia. August was a record month for us in terms of passengers carried and flights operated, with the highest number of passengers in a single day - 21,600. The company expects to finish the year with a total of 4.6 million passengers, surpassing the previous record of 4.5 million set during the era of the former JAT. This represents an important milestone, confirming the company’s growing significance in regional and international air transport.
Looking ahead: sustainable growth and innovation
With a tradition spanning nearly 100 years, Air Serbia, true to its slogan “Tradition elevated”, combines experience and innovation to redefine loyalty and elevate the passenger experience to a new level. By investing in technology, comfort, and personalised services, our company follows global trends and actively shapes the future of travel, where the ability to quickly adapt to changes, simplicity, and service quality are the key indicators of success. By combining the best of our business experience with innovation and technological breakthroughs, we are introducing our own loyalty program for the first time, offering members enhanced benefits and the ability to earn points even when they do not fly. Together with Visa, we will launch the first co-branded card designed to complement the upcoming loyalty program. We strive to personalise the travel experience through various perks and to transform traditional service into a modern, customer-oriented offer via digital and logistical innovations.
We have recently signed a five-year strategic partnership with Loyalty Juggernaut Inc., representing a key step in transforming the way we communicate with our passengers. We are building a modern loyalty ecosystem that rewards users for every interaction with Air Serbia. This partnership comes at a time when digitalisation has become a central part of the company’s operations. From enhanced operational systems and optimised capacity management to the application of artificial intelligence in analytics, the focus remains on increasing efficiency, consistent passenger experiences, and strengthening the trust of both passengers and partners.
Looking ahead, Air Serbia continues to build sustainable growth through strategic investments and technological innovation, ensuring that network expansion aligns with the real needs of the market and passengers. Our growth is not arbitrary– it is the result of a clear strategy. The combination of ambition, innovation, and responsible expansion forms the foundation of our long-term success.
